Losing weight with the Mirena coil: mission impossible?
Good morning everyone. I had the Mirena coil fitted a year ago, everything's great, but there's one catch. Over this year, I've gained 6 kilos, which is just catastrophic for me at 158 cm tall. The weight is localised only on my stomach and thighs, and it's really cellulite in its nastiest form—lumpy, flabby, jelly-like, disgusting. And I can't get rid of it no matter what. I eat sensibly, no sausages or pasta. I can't give up sweets, but I only have them in the first half of the day—and even then just 1-2 sweets. Exercise—useless. My lovely muscles are just hidden under a layer of fat. Has anyone dealt specifically with localised, hormonal weight gain? How do you fight it? Maybe there's a specific diet system, foods to avoid? Thanks to everyone who responds.
I'm in the same situation. Two years ago, I had a Mirena coil fitted, and within a year, I gained 8 kg. We're almost the same height too ))) I'm 159 cm. With that weight, I looked like a pig. Over the next year, I lost 4 kg. I simply started eating less and drinking more. Now, two years later, my weight continues to slowly creep down. Squats are really good for tackling cellulite. In short, don't panic—you'll lose those extra kilos, you just need to be patient.

Exactly. And I looked like a piglet too. No, even like a spinning top—narrow at the top, thin legs at the bottom, but the belly—sticking out in all directions, with horizontal folds running across the waist.
Thanks for the support!

Don't forget to moisturise your skin well in problem areas, otherwise stretch marks aren't far off. I spoke with my gynaecologist about the extra kilos and any connection with Mirena. She told me there's no connection at all, and everyone gains weight sometimes, especially approaching 30 (I'm 29). Meanwhile, the internet is full of stories from women who gained those same 6-8 kg in the first year of Mirena. Too many coincidences. But, as I said, don't worry. They'll go away in time.

I'm 33 :( I think metabolism definitely "played its part" here too... Thank you.

I didn't gain weight. I had it for 5 years. Now I've had Nova T inserted for the second time. Everything is fine with weight too.

I had a Mirena coil fitted two months ago, and so far I haven't noticed any changes in my weight or increased appetite. I'm 34. In my younger years, I was on oral contraceptives for six years and gained weight, but I believe I was to blame for that myself. I ate everything in sight and didn't exercise. As soon as I adjusted my diet and joined a fitness club, I lost weight.

Hello girls! I'm selling a Mirena coil. Here's my situation: the doctor prescribed treatment and subsequently the purchase of a Mirena coil, but it turned out that there's no need to have it inserted. And it's quite expensive. I'd sell it at a discount, in Moscow, and I have the receipts and the packaging is intact.

Girls, I used to weigh 74kg. I had a regular Russian IUD inserted three years ago and lost weight drastically. At the moment, I weigh 38kg and can't gain any weight. They say it's impossible to lose weight from an IUD, but I'm ashamed to go outside. I don't know how to put on weight—I eat everything in sight.

Girls, can you tell me if this could be a result of the Mirena or if it's another reason and I should be concerned? I had the Mirena inserted 10 months ago. For no apparent reason, I've lost 7 kg, even though I've tried various diets and wraps before and nothing helped me lose even a little weight. Now I'm eating everything, even having big meals at night, and getting the opposite result.

I had the Mirena coil fitted in August 2014, and I'm generally satisfied with it, but there's one issue—I've gained 6 kg since then. For me, this is really frightening because I have a phobia of gaining weight... For the past month, I've been going for morning runs, covering 2 km every day, and trying not to eat after 6 p.m. But I haven't seen much of a result... I think I've gained the weight because of the coil, as I've noticed that my weight has been creeping up since August.

Of course, it's because of the coil... I also gained the first 6 kg in just 3 months after having the coil fitted... And my lifestyle remained exactly the same... I went on a diet twice - useless! My weight stopped at 76 kg and is stuck there for good... And I've 'rounded out' in places where I never used to 'round out' before... In March 2015, I went on a diet again, a very strict one - practically starving... After 2 weeks, the weight barely shifted, down by 2 kg... I hope to get back to my previous weight of 63 kg (height 170 cm). Write about your experiences! (natalifilipova@mail.ru)

I also have the Mirena coil, and I'm not feeling well because of the discomfort, bloating, and constant nervousness. And my weight has already started to shoot up.

Good afternoon! I recently had an IUD inserted, and I've also been experiencing constant bloating and weight gain, even though it's been two and a half months since giving birth. After giving birth and before the IUD, I weighed 53 kg at a height of 164 cm, and now I weigh 58 kg. I don't eat bread or sweets, even though I'm breastfeeding—I restrain myself and limit my intake significantly. Why am I gaining weight? And how can I lose it? Please advise.

I had an IUD for 7 months and liked it, but I gained 12 kg—I'm shocked. I was told this is a side effect and that I could try another one to see what happens. Does anyone know which one to choose specifically? They said it can also have a weight-loss effect. Girls, I need your help.

I've tried everything for weight loss, all in vain. With the IUD, I lost a bit of weight only to gain it back again. I don't want pills either, and my husband absolutely refuses to use condoms. I don't even know what to do. A week ago, I had the IUD removed because I had gained so much weight. I had hormone tests done, and the doctor said that if the results weren't normal, she wouldn't remove the IUD, but the tests were perfectly fine. It turned out the issue was with the IUD, so I had to have it removed. Now, I don't know which one to choose.

How can I gain weight? I weigh 51kg and am 150cm tall.
Girls, I had a simple copper IUD since 2000 – three times, and I always lost weight. But when I had it removed, I gained weight. Now, without the IUD, I'm 67 kg, whereas I always used to be up to 55 kg, with a height of 155 cm. Now my doctor has told me to get a Mirena due to endometriosis. I'm afraid I'll gain even more weight. Can you tell me what will happen to me? I don't know, I'm scared of gaining more weight.

I would be so happy if it were me. It'll be like this for you for about two years, and then everything will normalise and you'll gain a little weight. Just be careful with food, you'll get used to it.

I've had Mirena for less than a year, but in that time I've gained over 10 kg (height 161cm), I'm really worried about what will become of me if I keep gaining like this? I started gaining weight right after getting the coil, I decided on it due to illness, and other side effects started too, though the illness did stop progressing. I ate the same as before getting it. I'm trying to lose weight now, but the weight isn't shifting, I'm horrified. What should I do?

Hello everyone, I've found myself in the same predicament ((I had the Jaydess coil fitted, which is a subsidiary of the Mirena coil. And in just a month, I've already gained 4 kg ((this is despite going to the gym, hardly eating bread, and drinking plenty of water... Is it a coincidence, or have the hormones really started to have such an effect?
It's strange how all the doctors say there's no dependency at all. But I read so many such reviews on forums. I'm constantly craving food, and I've gained 4 kg. And they just won't go away. My brother isn't a doctor, but he explained it clearly—when you lose weight, all the toxins leave your body with water. And the hormones simply don't allow that to happen. I gained the weight quite quickly. But it's not even about the weight. It's that I can't lose it at all! I'm from Israel originally, and there's the same panic on our forums. They talk about libido too, and about depression. So... It's probably not for nothing that all the doctors are in agreement. It's not in their interest to tell us the truth. I'm going to get this ***** out! ;(

Hello! I also had Mirena fitted and I'm 7 kg heavier than usual! And the main thing is, no matter what I do, it just won't go away! I've always been slim and never prone to gaining weight. But now my stomach is sagging and I'm just generally round and chubby...

Good afternoon, it's been many months since you wrote your message. Please tell me how the situation has changed, what did you do to start losing weight or did you simply have the coil removed? I'm still the same; after giving birth, I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I had the coil fitted when my son was 3 months old, now he's already 6 months, and I've gained +4 kg and feel like a balloon((( constant discomfort and bloating))(( Please advise, what did you do?

Girls! Well, what should I do? Mirena has regulated my women's health, but I don't feel like going out because of my weight. On any diet, I lose no more than 3 kg. I've heard about black cumin oil—maybe you know, could it help in my case?

Please, could you tell me, I had a coil inserted in 2014 and now I can't lose weight, do you think it could be because of the coil even though my appetite is good? What should I do, can you advise?

There's also an issue with weight gain; I've had the Mirena coil for a month and I'm already thinking about removing it because I'm afraid of gaining weight, and the process has already started—I don't know what to do.

Absolutely, no matter what doctors say about just needing to limit carbohydrate intake, my patience has run out! This system needs to be removed. Mirena has been in for three months, and I am not myself. My weight keeps creeping up (and that's with personal training sessions at the fitness centre, fasting days, and so on. More on that later), my mood is terrible 😨, I constantly feel like just lying down, and I won't even mention the acne on my back, shoulders, and chest 😠! I didn't have this even as a teenager!

By the way, Verospiron (prescribed by a gynaecologist as a diuretic and anti-androgen) hasn't helped either, explaining the weight gain due to fluid retention and the appearance of hormonal acne.

It can cause periods lasting 10 days like a bucket) and everything hurts: breasts, stomach all days((
I had a standard Soviet IUD inserted and immediately lost weight, maintaining a constant weight of 49–53 kg with my height of 159 cm. After removing it, I started gaining weight. I've been without the IUD for a year and have gained weight, now at 60 kg. I now want to have a simple IUD inserted again.

Hello everyone! This morning I'm going to have this ***** removed. In 9 months, I've gained 15 kg!!!!! I couldn't possibly have eaten my way to that weight if I tried—it's just awful. Considering I have joint problems, I have two options: either crutches or recurring endometriosis—I've chosen the latter.... I can't go on like this anymore.....

I also live in Germany and had the Mirena coil fitted four months ago, and I've started gaining weight too. I'm shocked, even though I'm watching what I eat. I've also been thinking about removing it or not, but I just can't make up my mind. And with my periods, they last about ten days with constant bloating. It's enough to make you want to cry. Please tell me, if I remove the coil, will I lose weight? Has anyone taken it out and lost weight afterwards?

Hello, please tell me, I have endometrial hyperplasia, and the doctor said I need to have a Mirena coil fitted. My weight after childbirth is very high, I eat twice a day, sometimes even just once, but the weight isn't going away. My face is covered in acne, and no matter what I apply or wash with, nothing helps. I've read some reviews and now I don't know what to do. Maybe someone can offer advice or has had similar issues before getting a Mirena coil. I'm eagerly awaiting your response!!!!

Hello, I also have a Mirena coil. I had it inserted at the end of 2013. I bought it myself without consultation, got the tests done, and had it inserted at a private clinic. Next year, it needs to be removed, and overall, I'm satisfied with it, but I've only just started gaining weight. I think because of it, losing weight is really difficult. I took Reduxin for two months, but unfortunately, all I got was high blood pressure and psychosis, nothing else! Has anyone heard about the capsule? It's inserted in the arm and also lasts for 3-5 years?

Hello, I had a Mirena coil fitted a year ago and have gained 6 kg since then. I exercise regularly and eat very little, so I am certain the cause is the coil. About four months after insertion, I developed severe acne on my face—it was awful. My gynaecologist prescribed Acnecutane, a very strong medication for acne issues. Within two months, I cleared up the acne, but then another problem started: all my mucous membranes became dry, and the skin on my wrists began cracking and bleeding. Honestly, nothing good has come of this! I’ve decided to go and have the coil removed. I’ll share the outcome when I can.

A month ago, I had my Mirena removed. Over 5 years, I gained +15 kg. After removal, I lost -4 kg in a month. Without doing anything special. Don't let them convince you that hormones have nothing to do with it. That's nonsense.

I have a Jaydess coil! The doctor assured me it wouldn't affect anything! But after two months, I gained 5 kg, then another 5! So a total of ten kg! It's been in for a year now! No matter how hard I try, the weight won't go down! I'm going to have it removed on Saturday! I'm just afraid I won't be able to lose the weight now! I can't find any reviews about it...

My neighbour has gained 30 kg. And she's a vegetarian. She's always eating vegetables. Right before my eyes, she turned into a heifer. She had it removed. Seems like she started losing weight. Hormones are such a thing. Those who talk about keeping yourself in check and all that simply haven't experienced it. But I have, when I didn't have my period for half a year. I ate very little. I used to cycle to school, 15 km one way. And I still gained weight. Just imagine. My parents were in shock because I barely ate anything. As soon as I got better, the weight just dropped off. And Mirena... I've heard a lot about it, just like what's been written here. But doctors don't say anything. Look at gynaecologists. They're all either a bit plump or moustached. Pay attention.
