Losing weight with Mirena IUD: mission impossible?
Good morning everyone. I got the Mirena IUD a year ago, everything's great, but there's one catch. Over this year, I've gained 6 kilograms, which is just catastrophic for me at 158 cm tall. The weight is localized only on my stomach and thighs, and it's really cellulite in its nastiest form—lumpy, flabby, jelly-like, disgusting. And I can't get rid of it no matter what. I eat rationally, no sausages or pasta. I can't give up sweets, but I only eat them in the first half of the day—and even then just 1-2 candies. Exercise? Useless. My beautiful muscles are just hiding under a layer of fat. Who's dealt specifically with localized, hormonal weight gain? How do you fight it? Maybe there's a specific diet system, foods to avoid? Thanks to everyone who responds.
I'm in the same situation. Two years ago, I got a Mirena IUD, and within a year, I gained 8 kg. We're almost the same height too ))) I'm 159 cm. With that weight, I looked like a pig. Over the next year, I lost 4 kg. I just started eating less and drinking more. Now, two years later, my weight continues to slowly drop. Squats work really well against cellulite. Anyway, don't panic, you'll lose those extra kilos, you just need to be patient.

Exactly. And I looked like a piglet too. No, even like a spinning top—narrow on top, thin little legs on the bottom, but the belly—sticking out in all directions, with horizontal folds running across the waist.
Thanks for the support!

Don't forget to moisturize your skin well in problem areas, otherwise stretch marks aren't far off. I spoke with my gynecologist about the extra kilos and any connection with Mirena. She told me there's no connection at all, and everyone gains weight sometimes, especially closer to 30 (I'm 29). Meanwhile, the internet is full of stories from women who gained those same 6-8 kg in the first year of using Mirena. Too many coincidences. But, as I already said, don't worry. They'll go away with time.

I didn't gain weight. I had it for 5 years. Now I've had Nova T inserted for the second time. Everything is fine with my weight too.

I had a Mirena inserted two months ago, and so far, I haven't noticed any changes in my weight or increased appetite. I'm 34. When I was younger, I was on oral hormones for six years and gained weight, but I believe I was to blame for that myself. I ate everything in sight and didn't exercise. As soon as I adjusted my diet and joined a fitness club, I lost weight.

Ladies, good afternoon! I'm selling a Mirena IUD. Here's my situation: the doctor prescribed treatment and subsequently the purchase of the Mirena IUD, but then it turned out there was no need to insert it. And it's quite expensive. I'd sell it at a discount, in Moscow, and I have the receipts and the packaging is intact.

Girls, I used to weigh 74kg. I got a regular Russian IUD three years ago and lost weight drastically. Right now, I weigh 38kg and can't gain any weight. They say you can't lose weight from an IUD, but I'm embarrassed to go outside. I don't know how to gain weight—I eat everything in sight.

Girls, can you tell me if this could be a result of Mirena or if it's another reason and I should be concerned? I had Mirena inserted 10 months ago. Without any apparent reason, I've lost 7 kg, even though I tried various diets and wraps before and nothing helped me lose even a little weight. Now I'm eating everything, even having big meals at night, and getting the opposite result.

I got the Mirena IUD inserted in August 2014, and I'm generally satisfied with it, but there's one issue—I've gained 6 kg since then. For me, this is really scary because I'm terrified of gaining weight... For the past month, I've been doing morning runs, covering 2 km every day, and trying not to eat after 6 PM. But I haven't seen much result... I think I've gained the weight because of the IUD, as I've noticed that my weight has been climbing since August.

Of course, because of the IUD... I also gained the first 6 kg in just 3 months after getting the IUD... And my lifestyle remained the same... I went on a diet twice—useless! My weight stopped at 76 kg and is stuck there for good... And I "rounded out" in places where I never "rounded out" before... In March 2015, I went on a diet again, a very strict one—practically starving... After 2 weeks, the weight barely shifted down by 2 kg... I hope to achieve my previous weight—63 kg (height 170 cm). Write about your experiences! (natalifilipova@mail.ru)

Good afternoon! I recently had an IUD inserted, and I also experience constant bloating and weight gain, even though it's been two and a half months since I gave birth. After giving birth and before getting the IUD, I weighed 53 kg at a height of 164 cm, and now I weigh 58 kg. I don't eat bread or sweets, even though I'm breastfeeding—I restrain myself and limit my intake significantly. Why am I gaining weight? And how can I lose it? Any advice?

I had an IUD for 7 months and liked it, but I gained 12 kg—I'm in shock. I was told this is a side effect and that I could see what happens if I try a different one. Does anyone know which one specifically to choose? They said it can also have a weight-loss effect. Girls, I need your help.

I've tried everything for weight loss, and nothing worked. With the IUD, I lost a little weight but then gained it back again. I don't want to take pills either, and my husband doesn't believe in condoms at all. I don't even know what to do. A week ago, I had the IUD removed because I had gained so much weight. I got my hormones tested, and the doctor said that if the tests weren't normal, I shouldn't remove the IUD, but the results were perfect. So, the issue was definitely with the IUD, and I had to remove it. Now, I don't know which one to choose.

How can I gain weight? I weigh 51 kg and my height is 150 cm.
Girls, since 2000, I had a simple copper IUD inserted three times—I always lost weight. And when I removed the IUD, I gained weight. Now, without the IUD, I weigh 67 kg, whereas I always used to be 55 kg before, with a height of 155 cm. Now my doctor told me to get Mirena due to endometriosis. I'm afraid I'll gain even more weight. Can you tell me what will happen to me? I don't know, I'm scared of gaining more weight.

I would be so happy if it were me. It'll be like this for you for about two years, and then everything will normalize and you'll gain a little weight. Just be careful with food, it'll become a habit.

I've had Mirena for less than a year, but in that time I've gained over 10 kg (height 161 cm), I'm really worried about what will happen to me if I keep gaining like this? I started gaining weight right after getting the IUD, I decided on it because of an illness, and other side effects started too, though the illness stopped progressing. I ate the same as before getting it. I'm trying to lose weight now, but the weight isn't coming off, I'm horrified. What should I do?

Hi everyone, I've run into the same trouble ((I got the Jaydess IUD, which is a sister product to Mirena. And in just a month, I've already gained 4 kg ((even though I go to the gym, hardly eat bread, and drink plenty of water... Is it a coincidence, or have the hormones really started to affect me this way?
It's strange how all the doctors say there's no dependency at all. But I read so many reviews like this on forums. I constantly crave food, and I've gained 4 kg. And they just won't go away. My brother isn't a doctor, but he explained it clearly—when you lose weight, all the toxins leave your body with water. And the hormones just don't allow that to happen. I gained the weight pretty quickly. But it's not even about the weight. It's that I can't lose it at all! I'm from Israel, and there's the same panic on our forums. They talk about libido too, and depression. So... It's probably not for nothing that all the doctors are in agreement. It's not in their interest to tell us the truth. I'm going to get this ***** out! ;(

Hi! I also got a Mirena and I'm 7 kg heavier than usual! And the main thing is that no matter what I do, it just won't go away! I've always been thin and not prone to gaining weight. But now my stomach is sagging, and I'm just round and chubby overall...

Good afternoon, it's been many months since you wrote your message. Please tell me how the situation has changed, what did you do to start losing weight or did you simply remove the IUD. I'm still the same; after giving birth, I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I had the IUD inserted when my son was 3 months old, now he's already 6 months, and I've gained +4 kg and feel like a balloon((( constant discomfort and bloating))(( Please advise, what did you do?

Girls! Well, what should I do? Mirena has normalized my women's health, but I don't want to leave the house because of my weight. On any diet, I lose no more than 3 kg. I've heard about black cumin oil—maybe you know, could it help in my case?

There's also an issue with weight gain. I had Mirena inserted a month ago and I'm already thinking about removing it because I'm afraid of gaining weight, and the process seems to have already started. I don't know what to do.

Absolutely, no matter what doctors say about just needing to limit carbohydrate intake, my patience has run out! This system needs to be removed. Mirena has been in place for three months, and I am not myself. My weight keeps creeping up (despite personal training sessions at the fitness center with a coach, fasting days, and so on. And that's not all), my mood is terrible 😨, I constantly feel like lying down and doing nothing, and I won’t even mention the acne on my back, shoulders, and chest 😠! I didn’t have this even during my teenage years!

By the way, Verospiron (prescribed by a gynecologist as a diuretic and anti-androgen) isn't helping either, she explained the weight gain due to fluid retention and the appearance of hormonal acne.

It can cause periods lasting 10 days like a bucket) and everything hurts: breasts, stomach all days((
I had a regular Soviet-style IUD inserted and immediately lost weight, maintaining a steady weight of 49–53 kg with my height of 159 cm. After removing it, I started gaining weight. It's been a year without the IUD, and I've gained weight, now at 60 kg. Now I want to get a simple IUD inserted again.

Hello everyone! This morning I'm going to get this ***** removed. In 9 months, I've gained 15 kg!!!!! I couldn't possibly have eaten that much even if I wanted to—it's just awful. Considering I have joint problems, I have two options: either crutches or recurring endometriosis—I chose the second one.... I can't go on like this anymore.....

I also live in Germany and got the Mirena IUD inserted four months ago, and I've started gaining weight too. I'm shocked, even though I'm watching what I eat. I've also been thinking about removing it or not, but I just can't decide. And with my periods, they last about ten days with constant bloating. It's so frustrating, I just want to cry. Please tell me, if I remove the IUD, will I lose weight? Has anyone taken it out and lost weight afterward?

Hello everyone, I had a Mirena inserted 3 weeks ago and I've already gained 1.5 kg, feeling nervous, bloated... I don't know what to do yet... but it's still better than having an abortion. I already have 2 kids, and my husband doesn't want a 3rd ((( I got pregnant twice accidentally in a year despite using all kinds of contraceptives, so I don't know... but for now, there's only one plus: my face has cleared up))

Hello, please tell me, I have endometrial hyperplasia. The doctor said I need to have a Mirena inserted. My weight after childbirth is very high, I eat twice a day, sometimes even just once, but the weight doesn't go away. My face is covered in acne, no matter what I apply or wash it with. I read some reviews and now I don't know what to do. Maybe someone can give me some advice or has had similar problems before getting a Mirena. I'm eagerly awaiting your response!!!!

Hello, I also have a Mirena. I had it inserted at the end of 2013. I bought it myself without consultation, got the tests done, and had it placed at a private clinic. Next year, it needs to be removed, and overall, I’m satisfied with it, but I’ve only just started gaining weight. I think losing weight is really difficult because of it. I took Reduxin for two months, but unfortunately, all I got was high blood pressure and psychosis—nothing else! Has anyone heard about the capsule? It’s inserted in the arm and also lasts for 3–5 years?

Hello, I had a Mirena IUD inserted a year ago, and over the year, I gained 6 kg. I exercise and eat very little, so I'm sure the reason is the IUD. Four months after insertion, I developed very severe acne on my face—it was awful. My gynecologist prescribed the medication Accutane, which is a very strong medication for acne issues. Within two months, I got rid of the acne, but another problem started: all my mucous membranes became dry, and the skin on my wrists began cracking until it bled.
In short, nothing good came of it! I decided to go and have the IUD removed. I’ll share the results when I can.

A month ago, I had my Mirena removed. Over 5 years, I gained +15 kg. After removal, I lost -4 kg in a month. Without doing anything special. Don't let them convince you that hormones have nothing to do with it. That's nonsense.

I have a Jaydess IUD! The doctor assured me it wouldn't affect anything! But after two months, I gained 5 kg, then another 5! So a total of ten kg! It's been in for a year now! No matter how hard I try, the weight won't come off! I'm going to have it removed on Saturday! I'm just afraid I won't be able to lose the weight now! I can't find any reviews about it...

My neighbor gained 30 kg. And she's a vegetarian. She's always eating vegetables. Right before my eyes, she turned into a cow. She took it off. Seems like she started losing weight. Hormones are such a thing. Those who talk about keeping yourself in check and all that just haven't experienced it. But I have, when I didn't have my period for half a year. I ate very little. I rode my bike to school, 15 km one way. And I still gained weight. Just imagine. My parents were in shock because I barely ate anything. As soon as I got better, the weight just dropped. And Mirena... I've heard a lot about it, like what's written here. But doctors don't say anything. Look at gynecologists. They're all either plump or mustached. Pay attention.
