Hello everyone! I'm writing on the forum with this question. I had a medical check-up at work, and according to the blood tests, my ESR reading is really high at 40. The normal is up to 20. Everything else is normal. The doctor asked me what illness I have, why it's so high. She said to retest in about 2 months. At the moment, I'm not ill with anything. I've read online that high ESR can occur with cancer, autoimmune diseases, even with HIV. I've already worked myself up into a right state. Please write if anyone has had such a high reading, what the outcome was. Thanks.
When I had pneumonia, it was 70 or more (I don't remember exactly).

Author, get your tumour markers and tests for HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis done.

Author, don't overthink things just yet. ESR is an indicator of inflammatory processes in the body; it can even rise with appendicitis or pneumonia. Ask your GP for a referral to an immunologist or retake the test at a private clinic. At my local clinic, my CA 15-3 tumour marker was elevated—I thought it was all over, time to write a will—but a retest elsewhere came back fine. It makes you wonder how they conduct these tests, doesn't it? Even doctors themselves say the labs aren't up to scratch (my endocrinologist, for instance, told me they often guess the TSH results). There's no need to stress for now; calm down. If you're constantly feeling unwell, experiencing fatigue, or losing weight, that's one thing, but if you're a perfectly healthy, blooming young lady, that's another, and there's no reason to worry yet. I'd retest at a private practice (but only one you trust—ask friends for recommendations), and most importantly, I'd push for a referral to an immunologist. Many people have weakened immune systems these days, which can lead to all sorts of irregularities in test results.

Well if she's had her medical check-up, then she's definitely had her biochemistry and HIV, hepatitis, syphilis tests done. If only the ESR is off the charts, that's usually not a signal for doctors to take action.

Something serious. You should also get checked for tuberculosis. Even with my chronic cystitis, adnexitis, and autoimmune bowel disease, my ESR is normal.

The ESR was even higher. It turned out to be sinusitis.

An elevated ESR is a likely sign of inflammation. 40 is not that alarming. It could be due to a recent respiratory infection.

Don't worry and just retake the test. In serious diagnoses, the ESR is much higher.

Visit your GP and have a full blood count done (preferably on your own before seeing the GP so you can come with the results ready), as this will already give a rough idea of the cause.

Damn, I've got an elevated ESR too, 66.5. They've referred me for tumour markers and to a haematologist. I'm sitting here worrying, waiting for the results.

Oh dear, my ESR is also elevated at 66.5. I've been referred for tumour markers and to a haematologist. I'm sitting here worrying, waiting for the results.
And were there any symptoms with this? Or were you feeling fine?!

Yeah, right, they'll reply. They only write when they're desperate, then they disappear and couldn't care less.

My ESR was actually 99... A temperature of 37.1°C occasionally appeared on the thermometer, though I didn't feel it. I was so frightened by the possible diagnoses they mentioned that I'm still depressed. I underwent all sorts of examinations. It turned out there were three coinciding factors that raised my ESR: Epstein-Barr virus, taking hormonal contraceptives, and iron-deficiency anaemia (haemoglobin 85, ferritin

I have had a permanently elevated ESR all my life; at most, doctors would simply mention it was above normal, and often they overlooked it entirely. It wasn't until about 15 years later that it became clear I had chronic tonsillitis.

And what tests do you get done to figure out about tonsillitis?

You need to see an ENT specialist for that

With autoimmune conditions, ESR will always be low

Tumour markers won't show anything

With cancer it can be 100, but 40 is an inflammatory process, mine is 41 too

For the past 15 years, every time I've had a medical check-up, my ESR has been elevated, and now I've come to see what people are writing about it. Believe me, if it were cancer or HIV, I wouldn't have lived for 15 years. ... perhaps because I have thyroid issues and have been taking thyroxine for about 28 years.

Exactly the same situation with me. ESR consistently between 15-25.

My ESR is 55, I have iron deficiency anemia with hemoglobin at 81, and ferritin.
From my bitter experience, I can say that if haemoglobin is low and ESR is high, it could very well be cancer. That was the case with my sister, my husband, and myself. But if haemoglobin is normal, while ESR is high and white blood cells are above normal, then it's an inflammatory process somewhere.

Not necessarily. It could be gastrointestinal problems, elevated bilirubin - low haemoglobin.

My son is 22 years old. He had a blood test last Saturday, and his ESR was 30. I'm very worried, as he currently has no pain. A month ago, he had the flu, and he also goes to the gym. In the summer, his navel became inflamed and pus-filled (he's a hairy guy). We treated it with antibiotics and ointment. The doctor recommended removing the hair around his navel with a laser. Since then, there has been no inflammation. Yesterday, we did more tests and an ultrasound. The ultrasound was all clear. We're waiting for the test results now. I'm very anxious about my son. Can you tell me if you've found the cause of the high ESR?

Same here! I'm on hormones too! ESR 37, 40! The GPs keep quiet because all the other blood markers are normal! Well, my knees hurt! I'm constantly wondering too! Why is the reading high?

Please tell me, can ESR be 43 due to inflammation from osteochondrosis and headaches? I'm really worried. In November it was 18 and now it's 43.

And back in Soviet times, an ESR of 70 was a massive red flag! They admitted me to hospital within 2 hours - turned out I had thyroid inflammation. Was hospitalised for a month.
