Please help with some …

Please help with some advice. I've been caught by a dental abscess while on holiday, in another country.

Hello!
I'm currently not in Russia, returning back in about 6 days. My gum started swelling, now I've woken up - I realise it's a dental abscess. I've read all sorts of interesting things about how this illness can lead to consequences up to and including fatal outcomes. I really don't fancy kicking the bucket or reaching the stage where the disease affects the brain membranes. But I've no chance to see a doctor before returning - there are very few dentists here. And the ones I've found are absolutely dreadful, I reckon I could cut my own gum better myself. But I wouldn't fancy that either.
I've worked myself up into a proper state of nerves and just want to hear the opinion of someone not caught up in my panic - what would you advise? Are there any alternatives? Please also share your own stories of this illness etc

I'd be really grateful to you, this is genuinely extremely important to me.

Thank you.

You won't get any oak. Treat it with antiseptics - you can rinse your mouth with the same things you use for a sore throat during a cold (salt, baking soda, chlorhexidine, miramistin, chamomile, etc.). There's also Metrogyl gel, often used to treat gums for various inflammations like abscesses, stomatitis, etc. You can take regular painkillers. I sympathise; it can indeed be painful, but it might pass. If it gets really bad, antibiotics are prescribed, but if you catch it in time, you might manage without them. Sometimes they incise the gum, and other times it bursts on its own, the pus drains, and it heals, or it doesn't even get to that point—the inflammation just subsides without pus. By the way, since you're writing here, you have internet access. So, what's stopping you from googling how to treat a dental abscess?

There's no need to go abroad for a vacation. I'm currently in Sochi with my friend. She had the same issue—we went to a good doctor on recommendation, got everything sorted for a small fee, and now we're relaxing without any worries.

First aid is the help that's right at your fingertips. Your urine, use it to rinse your gums and mouth. You won't believe it, but everything will clear up. I did this back in the 90s when we used to go on hikes deep into the forest. The camp leader taught me. I still remember it to this day; I didn't die from it. Give it a try, after all, you're not going to drink it.

That's just it - I did google it, and every other time you come across terrifying promises that you won't last much longer and urgently need a doctor (maybe I'm exaggerating, but that's what stuck with me). Of course, I did pick up a couple of useful tips about rinses and antibiotics (thankfully I have them with me), but I got pretty scared, honestly.
That's why I wanted to hear an additional opinion.
Thank you for your answer)

With a dental abscess, antibiotics can reduce the inflammation, and you might avoid needing an incision. My husband dislikes doctors because he had an abscess lanced before, and they introduced an infection, leaving him on sick leave for a month. Recently, he had another severe abscess and didn't go. He took antibiotics—Amosin twice a day, plus paracetamol—and it cleared up, touch wood. Check what's available there and take them; it might be even better than having someone poking around in your mouth.

Oh, that classic Russian boorishness! Well, yes, our Spa Hotel "Islands" Sochi is only for paupers 😁😂🤣 I think we paid more for our room than you did))

Girls, don't argue, Sochi is far from a dump now; it's been built up so well it's better than abroad. I particularly enjoyed living in the mountains at Krasnaya Polyana, the service was superb. And in Sochi itself, it's lovely – the sea was clean, and the bridges, the buildings, everything is new.

Well, who are you telling this to? People who vacation in Turkish "abroad" and don't realize that a holiday in Sochi now costs more than "aBroad"!

Fast on water these days. Starvation completely kills the microbes.

I don't want to alarm you further, but a dental abscess is genuinely serious, and delaying is risky. All the frightening information you might come across is not an exaggeration, including the high likelihood of ending up in the maxillofacial surgery department if you wait (I'm speaking from experience with several family cases—both when time was lost and when it wasn't). Go to the dentist; they need to drain and clean it, which are straightforward procedures, and you can continue the rest of your treatment with a trusted specialist once you're back home.

If you can get your hands on Lincomycin, take it. It's a very strong antibiotic, specifically used in dentistry. It has helped me. However, even in Russia, it's now only available with a prescription.

Why would I be jealous? 😂 What makes you think it's a shithole? 🤣😂😁 And where are you then? There's the Black Sea, weakly salted, hence the huge number of intestinal infections.

Coxsackie virus was first discovered last century in the USA. Since then, outbreaks have been recorded worldwide, particularly frequently at popular resorts in Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Spain, Italy, and others... (c).

So what's wrong with the seas and oceans there?)) My friend's whole family caught Coxsackie in Turkey last year.

You are not immune to intestinal infections at any hot resort. Only in Russia is it easier to find a doctor and receive medical assistance than abroad.

What do you mean? Everyone who goes on holiday has insurance. You call the insurance company, they usually immediately give you a list of clinics and next steps, and off you go.

Have you never dealt with insurance companies? Many people get insurance just for show, for the visa. Getting money out of an insurance company can often be difficult.

Have you never dealt with insurance companies? Many people get insurance just for the sake of it, for the visa. It can be tricky to squeeze money out of the insurance company. What do you mean, squeeze money?! In all the times we've used insurance, it was about getting medical services without having to pay anything ourselves. If you're trying to squeeze money out of them as well, then yes, that is tricky 😄

Author, start the antibiotics; the swelling should subside. And upon arriving home, see a doctor urgently—removal might be necessary.

Antibiotics. Or Nise, ibuprofen - morning, evening. I had the same thing myself (gum got inflamed) what the devil was I thinking) Nise helped from the first tablet. Took it for three days. 23367

Judging by the difficulties with dentists there - it's actually you who's relaxing in a shithole. I find it hard to imagine a resort where there wouldn't be a doctor, or the possibility to reach one within a reasonable time.

Thanks, that gives me hope. I'm taking antibiotics - amoxiclav - and in connection with this a question: do you know how soon any effect should appear? I just want to understand the progression.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely I'll be able to. I'm taking Amoxiclav. When I was preparing, I chose it considering it's a strong enough antibiotic. I hope it helps.

Yeah, and you can't even buy antibiotics

Well... Antibiotics are no simple medicines. In my view, it's better either not to take them at all, or to take a full course prescribed by a doctor.
The OP really needs to go see a doctor. Decent insurance will cover the trip to the nearest doctor if it's really far to get there.

Wisdom tooth coming through? Take antibiotics. Go to the doctor when you arrive. Everything will be fine. By the way, how many days for the antibiotics?

Fortunately, the swelling has gone down – the antibiotics and a local antiseptic with chlorhexidine did the trick. But still, as soon as I get back, I'll dash straight to the dentist.
Thanks everyone for the advice)
It really helped calm me down.

And the site itself is a whole other story – I stumbled upon it by chance while searching for info about my issue. And it turned out to be a whole world here. Some topics just sucked me in and helped take my mind off things.

I used my insurance in Turkey when I had to treat a bad tooth. No problems at all. The insurance paid for the treatment, didn't cost me a penny. The clinics in Turkey are excellent, the medical staff are very attentive.

Occasionally, it occurs due to getting chilled. A teaspoon of salt, a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. Rinse that gum about four times a day. In a couple of days, it will all clear up. The post is old, but might still be useful to someone.

I had ceftriaxone injections (kson) - one a day for 3 days! And after the first injection, by evening, the swelling had gone down!!! Plus lincomycin into the gum, 1 injection, after the swelling went down! (This was prescribed by a dental surgeon after examination.) The dentist wanted the surgeon to extract it, but he decided to save the tooth) It worked!!!
