Anyway, I would try to be more articulate in my writing. You are right, dream, we should try to improve our English. I am not used to writing messages with idioms (by the way, even though the correct definition is an idiom, Canadians prefer to call them sayings) but I will try. I use them more often for oral expressions

So, I looked into pros and cons of dating a second guy and realized that he will never be home for me, for our future kids,. So, I cut the line there and stopped responding to him. The third guy was a construction worker, ain't my type and all, you know: no degree, most probably no grey mass in the brains, but he was good looking on the photo. So I thought, what the heck, I can just try
Марлетка
So, we met. I have no idea when his profile photo was taken, maybe 20 years ago. He was quite old, and to add fuel to the fire, he was much shorter than he wrote in profile. We went to a local pub (I have no idea why I went with him; maybe because I had nothing else to do and I thought it would be interesting to see what he has to offer). So. It was soooo boring. He had nothing to say, had no personality, and everyone around looked at me like I was a whore. So, I had to end the humiliation and asked him to take me home. That was my third unsuccessful experience with guys from the website (even though, the first guy was a catch, but I lost his phone number)

I will write more later, have to go.

MY POINT EXACTLY!! I mean "that' can always be omitted, it just goes without saying, the problem is that "suggest" should NOT be followed by "TO" , either "that" of nothing as you've confirmed (which is more or less the same thing actually, like in, say "I tell you (that) I know this"..sorry for the crummy explanation, but i'm really past the rules now. abd I hope you got my point anyways. these are just details really. what's more important is the big picture. I do know that lots of americans don't care for the grammar that much (and I actually could relate to that to some extent). Just for laughs, this is the recent one that made me smile: "little lone" :)) can you get what it stands for? "let alone" nice, huh? :) it as in the middle of a centence of course, but i won't recall it now

i know, but still, the mere fact that the majority prefers "cock" doesn't really dictate the rule for everyone. I, for one, still like dick better. and I'm not shitting you saying that I did come across this word being used in very sexually charged ways (like a guy asking to slip a condom on his dick) as well as I've seen "cock" being used completely out of any sex scene (much like your story with your huddy;s bro or smth.) so...go figure! I mean it only proves that this was never worth argueing over. Everybody's right in their way.

don't you get my point here? it doesn't take any living abroad to abe to speak english. you've got no borders when you are online, right? :) that's the main principle. what it does take is your desire and intention. my story is pretty individual, the most important thind is that i could speak english no worse (if not better) even with no experience living abroad. good luck and sweet dreams :)

:) if it pleases you to think so :) i actually got down to "yo, bitches" long after my thesis (in english) so...whatever. i'm just enjoying the game, ya know. call me a perv :) i'm sick enough of the formal business english language i have daily at work..just fooling around here, ya know. that's what chatting is for, isn't it? i mean if you are looking for something academic, why don't you log on to some web sourcing like "the economst" or alike? would make more sense, do ya think?

oh, and btw (it stroke me with your first posts, but i held my tongue)...it's pretty ironcal that u of all ppl popped in here with your unjustified critisism, cuz I do remember you by your recognizable userpic and nick from reading other threads, and funny enough your posts were always kinda annoying to me, I'd try and skip them as much as i could, as it really felt you had absolutely nothing to say, but kept on posting. reminded me of some mediocre wannabe. and what an irony it is to have you commenting here :) small world, huh :) well, guess we would all welcome your immaculate and exemplary english :) and be all eyes to learn from it , of course :) so, don;t hesitate to cut me down with your skills :)

There are no rules for using slang. But, let's just agree to differ and leave it at that.

it doesn't take any living abroad to BE abe to speak english.

Maybe I am just nitpicking. :)

just in case someone's interested...wanted to recommend a pretty nice brittish film (page eight) which is quite enjoyable language-wise (even though I'm not much of a British english fan) and, yep, Marley, the brits tend to stick to the correct grammar, still :) i guess i'm somewhere in between the two extremes

Actually, words like juvenile, ridiculous, immaculate and exemplary are widely used. I use them a lot, especially when I am arguing.
It is very common to say: Don't be ridiculous
He had immaculate report
His actions were exemplary
Even though the woman was over 30, she was juvenile (meaning, youthful or childish in this context). Most probably, if I was arguing with you, I would use some of those

Plus, you have to understand, I live in Toronto, the business centre of Canada, and also, the immigrants' city. I work in international company with people all over the worlds, so, I have to speak and write the way everybody understands. Got used to it after many years. Plus, you have to understand, people with technical background very rear are good speakers. On the other hand, my teacher always said, don't be too complicated, try to speak simple, so everybody can understand you

I recall a Russian guy, he came to Canada and started speaking with all the fancy words, putting idioms wherever needed or not. Nobody could understand him. So, my motto is, take it easy. Am I sorry for my English - no. I started learning it at 22, consequently, I think I did quite well. I with my parents hired me a tutor to help with English when I was in school, but they did not. Never needed it for a job until we decided to move to Canada
Марлетка
For some people English comes easy, was not easy for me. Does not matter now; my English is good enough to land a good job. The only thing I could assume, most probably I understand English better than dream (no offence) as I watch movies in English every day, listen to the news, English at work, English at home. Maybe know better how people use it here, in Canada.

No, no offense at all, don't worry :) I'm pretty confident with my English to be offended by such trifle things. In fact, I do too :) Not on a daily basis for lack of time but whenever smth is available in english, i watch it in english. and, so far so good, you know. no complaints about understanding. If I could assess myself, I'd most definitely go for "I understand way better than I'm able to express myself" But whatever, really :) It;s quite difficult to see the full picture here anyways. Btw, english came very easily to me. As far as I can remember, I was always enjoying it rather than anything else. And I do like to absorb new vocabulary like a sponge. The same thing with russian actually. I always thought this was a true sign of an educated person (remember Pushkin with his incredible active vocabulary). On top of that I really like diversity of speech. I mean being comfortable with slang just the same as with academic or bookish vocabulary. I actually think language is a lot of fun, almost like a puzzle and words are its small particles.

funny enough, there is "ding" in german as well :) it can mean practically anything, like our "shtuka" very helpful actually when you dont know some word to replace it with "ding" :) I'm sorry, but i guess I ODed on English lately and now switched to a more relevant German mode :)
