Liver haemangioma

Liver haemangioma

Hello! Tell me, is there anyone here with the same diagnosis? How are you being treated, what are you doing? They found several haemangiomas in my liver. I'm really scared, to be honest. Maybe you have any advice on how to get rid of them? Thank you!

Not dangerous, benign, no treatment needed, cannot be removed in any way, observe - first follow-up one month after initial detection, then after 6 months, then once a year... Live happily and enjoy life...

Often, small haemangiomas can disappear after a few years without a trace. Monitoring is essential. Consult a surgeon if they begin to enlarge.

Don't worry needlessly. Live and enjoy life. I have a hemangioma. I get an ultrasound check-up every six months. I also drink herbal decoctions or take Essentiale Forte. In six months, this thing has shrunk by half. Wishing you good health!

A very relevant question! Good health to all, here's the gist.

We had an ultrasound done - moderate diffuse changes in the liver and pancreas, and a liver hemangioma of 0.9cm was found, with a constant feeling of heaviness in the right upper quadrant. The doctors say there's nothing terrible, but they're concerned about organ trauma (specifically impacts - in my case, it's a professional injury due to sports). So, the question is, if this hemangioma... God forbid, were to grow - how complex and dangerous are the operations to remove it, and what are the prospects for a full recovery after such interventions? Thanks in advance! Perhaps someone has additional advice beyond just enjoying life and not thinking about it! Thanks again!

The danger of hemangiomas lies in their susceptibility to trauma due to their vascular nature. When they are large (which, unfortunately, is my case), they are removed through surgical intervention, as unfortunately, all other methods are ineffective for large ones. Operations are typically well-established in major hospitals with good surgical hepatology or gastroenterology departments. In case of injury, a hemangioma may rupture, leading to internal bleeding, or it may grow rapidly. So, keep a close watch on them.

A cyst and a hemangioma have been found in my liver. I am 44 years old, experiencing pain in the right upper abdomen, pain throughout the entire abdomen, weakness, hemoglobin at 96, daily headaches, nausea, and a feeling as if I've been put through a mincer. Most importantly, I eat and then vomit, but after a while, I feel hungry again. Could you advise on how this is treated and if a diet is necessary? Thank you.

Hello! I have been diagnosed with a 3 cm hemangioma, and the doctor said it's not serious at all, just needs monitoring! Can they dissolve on their own? I'm a bit worried. Thank you.

Could you please tell me which herbal teas you drink and how often you take Essentiale? I'm 34 years old and have five hemangiomas that are slowly growing, which worries me. I've had ultrasounds and a CT scan that confirmed they are hemangiomas, but initially, there was only one, and now there are five within a year. Is it true that yours has reduced in size? What kind of lifestyle do you lead, what do you eat, and have you changed any habits? I look forward to your response. Best regards, Valentina.

Hello. I've also discovered them in my case.

They are worrying me - I have pain in my right side and a feeling of heaviness there. I'm going for a CT scan soon.

I've read that they can appear due to birth control pills - I'm very anxious about this, as I don't always take the pills at the same time. And once, I stopped halfway through a pack for over a year. Could you share what you think might be causing yours to grow?

Hello, today I had an ultrasound which detected a 23mm liver haemangioma. I am 37 years old and have not given birth yet. If I become pregnant, since hormones will change, could it turn malignant?

Hello, an ultrasound detected a 2cm hemangioma two years ago. I gave birth a year ago, and now the ultrasound shows it has grown to 3cm, increasing by 1cm over two years! How dangerous is this? Could it have grown this much due to hormonal changes during pregnancy? I haven't had a CT or MRI scan, but the doctor said that if it were cancer, it would have grown significantly over 2-3 years and definitely made itself known, so it's most likely a hemangioma.

Hello, haemangiomas were discovered incidentally in 1995, eight of them ranging from 15mm to 25mm. I was told to monitor them and that there was nothing to worry about. In 2000, they started growing by about 10mm per year. With my concerns, I consulted a doctor acquaintance who specialises in liver issues, and he said it was all in my head, that I just needed to keep an eye on them and there was nothing serious, and that there were no treatment options. By 2004, the largest one had reached 80mm, the next one 70mm, and so on. Before the haemangiomas were discovered, I already had one child and wanted more, but doctors advised against it (since at that time the largest was over 60mm). However, in 2004, I became pregnant and decided to go ahead with the birth, and... miraculously, the growth stopped (by the way, I wasn't even given a caesarean, although the doctor was against it, but the process went ahead, and to my delight, I gave birth naturally). A week ago, after another ultrasound, the growth has started again. I've spent the last two days on the internet trying to figure out what to do. Such large ones need to be removed radically, but then what would be left? I also read about enucleation, but that seems very risky too. On a foreign forum, I read about radiofrequency ablation (destroying the tumour from the inside with high temperature) – a woman wrote that her 80mm haemangioma reduced to 50mm, but I'm not sure I understood it correctly. If anyone has experience with this, please advise.

Hello! I have the same problem. Three years ago, they found a hemangioma of 6 cm and two of 1 cm each. I've been getting check-ups, and they weren't growing. Over the last six months, the large one has grown by 1.5 cm. The ultrasound doctor just shrugs. The surgeon said to wait another six months. I'm 51 years old, and I've been in menopause for six years—I think that's why it's growing. My thing protrudes beyond the liver by two-thirds and is pressing on my kidney, intestine, and gallbladder. They've prescribed some pills for women's issues and a medication called "Stella." I don't know what will happen now. I think surgery is unavoidable. No one writes about the surgery or what life is like afterward. If only someone would share their experience. No one responds. Maybe you know something? Please share. Do you really have ones that are 6 and 8 cm? How do you feel? I suppose everything hurts? How awful! How old are you? I sincerely wish you health and good luck.

Embolisation of haemangioma

Doctors recommend monitoring; if it's larger than 10 cm, there is a method called embolization (where access to the hemangioma's blood supply is cut off via embolization, and it may shrink or sometimes even disappear completely).

This is what I personally heard from the doctor who performed the ultrasound. Monitor every six months. And it's better not through ultrasound (when it exceeds 5 cm), but through a scanner (X-rays) or computed tomography.

I am also dealing with this issue as it concerns me personally.

I have two of them. The second one grew in half a year. I've seen many specialists. They all have a wait-and-see approach. Anything less than 7cm - they advise monitoring. Every six months. If surgery is needed, they often do embolisation of haemangiomas now. They say it can even be done under local anaesthesia. I don't know the details. I live in France. Here, they (doctors) have a somewhat "couldn't-care-less" attitude. Or maybe that's how it should be.

A month ago, I was also diagnosed with one hemangioma measuring 5*5, and a CT scan showed it as 6*6. The institute in Kyiv is recommending surgery, while the one in St. Petersburg suggests monitoring. I'm unsure what to do myself.

Three months ago, a hemangioma measuring 7*6 was accidentally discovered in me. I had both an ultrasound and a CT scan done, both in my hometown and at the Shalimov Institute in Kyiv. They told me I needed surgery and not to delay it for long. I went for an examination at the institute and saw all those people after their operations, and it became terrifying. Now I'm in the queue for surgery, but I'm still not mentally prepared for it. I keep turning it over in my head whether to have the operation or not.

And I also went to the Shalimov Institute, and they told me only surgical removal was an option, but I consulted with Russian doctors, and they say it's necessary to monitor it dynamically for now, and their methods are slightly different. At Shalimov, it's resection, while in Russia, it's sclerotherapy, which is more gentle.

Hello, I am from Tiraspol. In 2005, I was diagnosed with multiple liver hemangiomas. At that time, I had pain in the liver area and stomach discomfort, but after undergoing a CT scan and fibrogastroscopy, the conclusion was a stomach ulcer and multiple hemangiomas. The pain in the liver area was due to the stomach ulcers. Hemangiomas do not cause pain if they are small. That same year, a professor at the Odessa Regional Hospital suggested the only option: hepatic embolization, meaning to block off the largest tumour. Almost six years have passed, and everything is fine. The hemangiomas are not growing. For about 2-3 years, I had check-ups in Odessa every six months, and for the next three years, once a year. The main thing, dear friends, is not to be disheartened, and to have a check-up every six months or at least once a year.

Hello everyone! I thought I was the only one with this issue, but it turns out I'm not. In May this year, multiple hemangiomas were incidentally discovered in my liver during an ultrasound—two in the right lobe measuring 1.0 cm and two in the left lobe, one 2.0 cm and the other 4.5 cm. However, my liver function is normal, the liver isn't enlarged or diffuse, which already suggests it's not a malignant tumour. I was told to come back for another ultrasound in six months. So, on the 27th of October, I'll have a follow-up ultrasound, and we'll see what they say. My doctor told me that I was probably born with them or had a liver injury at some point.

Well, yes, I was told the same thing, only mine is 16 mm. I've been reading about this nuisance—either it's untreatable, or if it's large, a liver resection is needed. But someone on this forum wrote that they took herbs and it shrank.

But which herbs??? What I found online were some crazy mixtures with 100 ingredients. I don't believe in that.

I've read about milk thistle. But I've also discovered other issues, so I'm thinking about how to put together a herbal blend. I'm wondering if milk thistle is compatible with other herbs like chamomile, motherwort, yarrow...

Although my friend, who is a therapist (and has the same problem), says she takes Carsil and it doesn't grow. I really don't know.

And I have four haemangiomas; two were discovered four years ago, and another two two years later. Last year, one of them started growing, increasing from 1.2 to 32mm in a year, which really upset me. I had an ultrasound with a Doppler, which showed it's not a haemangioma but resembles a cyst, though not exactly. Most importantly, it doesn't appear malignant around the edges. The sonologist advised a puncture. I consulted surgeons, and they unequivocally said it's a cystic cavernous haemangioma and under no circumstances should a puncture be done. Now, six months have passed, it's time for another ultrasound, and my knees are trembling. Over the past four years, I've tried so many things, nothing helps, only makes it worse, and I constantly have pain in my right upper abdomen. I haven't had an MRI, as they say everything is clear as it is.

I can imagine how you're feeling. I felt the same when they discovered my fibroids (before the ultrasound). What have you been taking? I spoke with my friend who's a therapist; she's had the same issue for many years and doesn't take anything, only Corsil.

I've started drinking oat infusion now, I'll give it a try. If not, I'll try something else over the year. But of course, it's frightening. And then one of our friends suggested such methods (liver vessel embolization, sclerotherapy) instead of resection.

Hello everyone! I'm 24 years old. This August, two hemangiomas were accidentally discovered in my liver during an ultrasound: one in the right lobe measuring 98mm x 65mm and another 55mm x 56mm. I was told to come back for another ultrasound in three months. In October, I had a follow-up ultrasound which showed growth. My doctors aren't telling me anything, attributing it to a liver injury (but I haven't had one).

Hello, have you had an ultrasound done before, have you been under a doctor's supervision??

It could also be congenital.

Olga, I'm from Dnipro. Doctors strongly advise against drinking herbal decoctions, why is that? I've been taking BIOZIM, and over six months, I've grown by 12 mm. All the doctors have different opinions on this.

Hello Elena,

Are they advising you under no circumstances to drink herbal decoctions? And what is their reasoning? I've heard the opinion that if you want to drink them, go ahead, but it's purely a psychological thing (as if you're not sitting idly by but doing something), yet no one has said you absolutely must not drink them. Does that mean it could be harmful?
