No excess.
Normal fasting blood sugar levels are considered to be between 3.3 and 5.5 mmol/liter. Two hours after a meal, the glucose level can rise to 7.8 mmol/liter.
If levels are between 5.5 and 6.7 mmol/liter while fasting and between 7.8 and 11.0 mmol/liter after a meal, impaired glucose tolerance is diagnosed.
Diabetes mellitus is diagnosed if fasting levels exceed 6.7 mmol/liter and levels two hours after a meal exceed 11.0 mmol/liter.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fasting:
Normal: 3.3 - 5.5 mmol/l
Prediabetes: 5.6 - 7 mmol/l
Diabetes mellitus: 7 mmol/l and above
-----------------------------------------------------
The normal glucose curve is as follows:
Fasting – plasma glucose level less than 6.1 mmol/l,
Two hours after oral glucose intake, the level should be less than 7.8 mmol/l.
-----------------------------------------------------
A glucose level exceeding 11 mmol/l two hours later indicates diabetes mellitus.
-----------------------------
If the fasting glucose level is 7.0 mmol/l or higher, and two hours after a meal it is 11.1 mmol/l or higher,
this indicates that the person has serious problems with the pancreas, which have led to the development of diabetes mellitus.
A fasting blood sugar concentration of less than 7.0 mmol/l but more than 5.5 mmol/l,
and a level between 7.8-11.0 mmol/l two hours later,
indicates impaired glucose tolerance (a prediabetic state).
